MATHEMATICS ENRICHMENT OLYMPIAD 2011

The School of Mathematics, Statistics and Applied Mathematics at NUI Galway is running a Mathematics Enrichment Course on the following Saturday mornings: January 22, January 29, February 12, February 26, March 12, March 26, April 9 (NUI, Galway Olympiad) and May 7 (Irish Mathematical Olympiad). The sessions will be run by NUI Galway mathematicians and each one will focus on a different aspect of mathematical problem solving. The mathematical concepts that will be discussed are not directly related to the second level curriculum, and the course is intended as an opportunity for interested students to think about some challenging problems in a friendly and stress-free environment.

Outstanding students may be invited to participate in the Irish Mathematical Olympiad examination which is normally held in fairly early May. This examination is the qualifying exam for the 52nd International Mathematics Olympiad which will be held 16 to 24 July 2011 in the Netherlands. > Some problems from previous Irish Mathematical Olympiads are available at http://mathsci.ucd.ie/~cmwilmott/irmo.html

Senior cycle students who think they might enjoy the Enrichment Course are invited to attend, and it would be appreciated if Mathematics teachers could let their students know this. While all students are welcome, in reality this course is likely to be of interest only to students who are exceptionally keen on Mathematics. It would be unusual for more than three or four students from any one school to attend. The first session on Saturday January 22 will be held from 10.00 am until 1.00 pm in Room AC216, which is reached by walking along the main concourse towards the Bank of Ireland, and turning right at the bank into the Geography Department area (names of various campus locations, including Geography, are seen by zooming in on the interactive map at http://www.nuigalway.ie/campus_map ). The second session will be a week later at the same time and place. (In the unlikely event that the room location needs to change, we will post a sign on the door of AC216 giving the new location.) Interested students planning to attend, should contact Dr. Jerome Sheahan, by email at jerome.sheahan@nuigalway.ie
