BA Mathematical Studies    vs    BA Mathematics

BA Mathematical Studies (80 ECTS):

• It has been designed specifically for BA Arts (Honours) students.
• It complements numerically based subjects likes Economics, Geography, Psychology Studies.
• It meets the Teaching Council subject requirements for Mathematics, and is often taken in conjunction with a core teaching subject like English, Irish or a modern language
• It emphasizes modern applications of Mathematics.
• It emphasizes the cultural context of Mathematics
• It emphasizes methodology.
• Lectures largely focus on specific skills and understanding, which are developed with continuous assessment and assessed directly in the end-of-semester exams.
• 35 ECTS of modules are closely based on just three textbooks: Stewart's calculus book (27.5 ECTS), Lawson's algebra book (7.5 ECTS), Lay's linear algebra book (7.5 ECTS). Most modules are closely based on a textbook.
• Graduates with Mathematical Studies as one BA subject are versatile and employable.

BA Mathematics (80 ECTS):

• It consists of the core of the first three years of the 4-year BSc Mathematics degree aimed at Science students.
• It places less emphasis on cultural context, applications and methodology.
• It places more emphasis on proving theorems.
• It meets the Teaching Council subject requirements for Mathematics.
• Graduates with Mathematics as one BA subject are versatile and employable.
