| The School of Maths at NUI Galway is distinguished by a strong and vibrant community of mathematicians and statisticians whose commitment to and passion for our subject is clear through all research and teaching activities and achievements. Together, we form a fusion of mathematicians of broad-ranging hues who seek to understand, develop and explore our subject, all the while engaging our students in that drive. Our ethos is to enable a fun yet fulfilling environment in which approachability and helpfulness towards our students are fundamental. |

We care very much about our students transition to university level mathematics and about their subsequent development in the subject. We want our students to glimpse the heady and happening world of mathematics - and to venture further, with our help and support. Our commitment to excellence in teaching mathematics is evidenced by having scooped three awards in NUI Galway's coveted President's Awards for Teaching Excellence scheme over three consecutive years in the four years of its operation. Additionally, in November 2009, we enjoyed the distinction of our colleague receiving a Nairtl National Award for Excellence in Teaching. This scheme spanned 38 higher education institutions in Ireland and crossed all disciplines, with a final announcement of five winners. Such awards demonstrate our commitment to reflective and meaningful practice and are indicative of the standards of teaching and learning we both aspire to and achieve. |

The School of Maths is at the leading edge of mathematical research in numerous areas, notably the de Brun Centre for Computational Algebra Our research atmosphere is kept lively with a large cohort of graduate students contributing effectively on a daily basis. Like our undergraduate students, our graduates form an integral part of our community and they regularly interact with our students through tutorial and laboratory assistance and through a very successful students' Mathematics Society |
