The mathematicians within the School have expertise in many different
and interesting aspects of mathematics. You will receive a well
rounded education in traditional mathematics, but will also be
afforded the opportunity to explore the interplay between mathematics
and other subject areas, such as physics, chemistry, biology, computer
science and finance.
In your first year, you can take Physics, Chemistry or Biology as one of your four subjects. In 2nd year, up to a third of your modules can in an experimental subject.
A particularly exciting recent development has been the explosion of
the use of mathematics in the study of biological problems, for
example, in genetics, the treatment of cancer and heart disease, the
spread of diseases, and many other areas. You will be exposed to some
of these exciting developments in this course.
In the School of Maths at NUI Galway, we care very much about
students transition to university level
mathematics and about their subsequent development in the subject.
Our
commitment to excellence is acknowledged here at NUI Galway, with
members of staff receiving
the President's
Award for Teaching Excellence in three
consecutive years.
in three consecutive years in the four years since the scheme's inception.
At National Level, this year Dr Aisling McCluskey was one of five winners of
the highly
prestigious NAIRTL
National Award for Excellence in Teaching. This scheme spans 38
higher education institutions in Ireland and crosses all disciplines.
The SUMS Centre is a free drop-in centre where students can come and
work on their maths or stats problems in an informal environment. You
can work individually or in groups. SUMS is staffed by a team of
friendly and experienced tutors who are ready for your questions, if
you need them.
One of Aisling's quotes about SUMS would be good here.
In your final year project, you will apply the knowledge and insight that you
have gained over the previous three years to tackle a problem based on
modern mathematical research.
Recent projects in the School of Maths have included a study of the
mathematics of web crawlers, designing computer games to help students
learn mathematics, ... and, and, and
Through the process of problem-based learning you will discover the
techniques of doing research in the mathematical sciences, develop your
presentation and report writing skills and, most importantly, gain
confidence as a professional mathematician.
Ranked as one of the 25 top destinations to visit in Europe by Trip
Advisor, and only one of two Irish cities to feature in the list,
Galway has simply got it all.
Galway is a cultural centre, attracting thousands to the many
events throughout the year:
from Literature
and the Arts,
to Races
and oysters, Galway
is a festival city.
The strong links between the city and university are exemplified by
the level of engagement our students have with the cultural life of
Galway. Many were among the thousands of volunteers that made the Galway
stage of
the 2009
Volvo
Ocean Race such a success.
