4. GALWAY TRAFFIC WEB-CAM
Based at http://godel.nuigalway.ie/traffic/ this project involves setting up
a webcam at the IT Building directed on the Quincentennial Bridge (the main
ring road around Galway City). Besides providing a live image/video of
current traffic conditions on this bridge (the busiest in Galway), which
should be of obvious use to the city, it will also
-
analyse the movement of vehicles and calculate the
average speed on the bridge in each direction
-
store information on these average speeds over time to be able to
provide other statistics and trends, e.g.
-
variation of average speed over a given day (24 hour period), presented
e.g. as a graph
-
variation from day to day in the week of speeds (so we can answer such
questions as: on which day of the week is the traffic fastest/slowest?)
The project would naturally divide into three sections: setting up,
running and maintaining the software, image analysis (to catch moving
objects and recognise them as e.g. cars/trucks instead of a boat
on the river, a swan,...), and statistical/data gathering and presentation.
A mix of skills in web development,
image analysis and statistics would help in this project.
