The School of Mathematics, Statistics and Applied Mathematics at NUI Galway hosted a four-day undergraduate modelling workshop. Nineteen mathematical science students from seven institutions took part in team-based modelling of real-world problems. The format was loosely based on the Mathematical Contest in Modelling, with training and small-group study sessions provided by lecturers and postgraduate students of the School of Maths.

What the students thought
“I liked how we were allowed to solve the problems on our own from scratch without much help. Gave me a really good insight into what it would be like to have to model something for a company.”
“My favourite aspect of this school was getting a chance to work on difficult problems that have no set solutions, getting the chance to think about and work through problems ourselves. The talks at the end were really interesting! Also – free lunch!!’
“Working in teams to model solutions was a good, realistic method and was very beneficial. Meeting a group of similarly minded people was brilliant and really fun to extend our social circles.”
