The 6th de Brún Workshop
Linear Algebra and Matrix Theory: connections, applications and computations
NUI Galway
3rd-7th December 2012

The aim of this workshop is to bring together mathematicians with interests in various aspects of linear algebra and matrix theory, and their impact on other areas of pure and applied research.

The workshop will include five short lecture courses on a range of topics within linear algebra, as well as a programme of contributed research presentations. It is envisaged that the workshop, and particularly the short lecture courses, will be interesting and accessible not only to specialists but to all mathematicians whose work involves elements of linear algebra and/or matrix theory. Graduate students are particularly encouraged to participate, and all participants are invited to propose afternoon research talks of 30 minutes.

This workshop is the 6th in a series hosted by the de Brún Centre for Computational Algebra in the School of Mathematics, Statistics and Applied Mathematics at NUI Galway, and is supported by Science Foundation Ireland.

Lecture courses

The lecture courses are aimed at mathematicians with a general interest in linear algebra and matrix theory, but who don't necessarily have expertise in the topics of the courses. There will also be a full programme of afternoon research talks.

  1. Richard A. Brualdi, University of Wisconsin, Madison: Topics in Combinatorial Matrix Theory
  2. Peter Brooksbank, Bucknell University: Linear methods in computational algebra
  3. Carlos Martins da Fonseca, Universidade de Coimbra: Recent trends on spectral graph theory
  4. Iain Duff, Rutherford Appleton Laboratory, Oxfordshire, and CERFACS, Toulouse. Sparse Matrices
  5. Charles Johnson, College of William & Mary: Totally Positive Matrices

Registration and travel details

Schedule

The outline schedule is now available. The workshop will begin at 9.30am on the morning on Monday, December 3rd and finish on Friday, December 7th.
The workshop dinner will be held at 8pm on Wednesday, Dec 5th in the House Hotel. This will cost €30 per person, and it at participants own expense. You will need to register separately for the dinner. This can be done on the opening day of the workshop.
On Saturday December 8th by the inaugural Irish meeting for Linear Algebra Research. It is hoped that workshop participants will attend both events.

A detailed schedule will be provided closer to the time.

Registration

Registration for contributed talks is now closed. However, you can register for participation any time up Nov 30th. To register, please contact Niall Madden or Rachel Quinlan. Registration is free.

Participants who wish to attend the workshop dinner at on Wednesday in the House Hotel should register separately for that. The cost is €30 per person.

Travel, food and accommodation are at the expense of participants. However, the de Brún Centre hopes to fund the accommodation costs of graduate students and possibly others early stage researchers. Please contact Niall or Rachel as soon as possible if you would like to be considered for this support.

When registering, please also indicate if you will give a research presentation.

Location and travel

KEY INFORMATION:

For most overseas visitors, Dublin Airport is likely to be the most convenient point of entry to Ireland. Efficient and frequent bus services between Dublin Airport and Galway are provided by Citylink and Gobus. Citylink services depart from Bus Stops 5 and 6 (Zone 11) at Dublin Airport - from the arrivals hall follow the signs for buses and look for stops 5 and 6. Gobus services depart from the Coach Park which is in Zone 14. Both of these departure points are a short walk from either terminal building. The journey to Galway takes about three hours.

Alternatively, Shannon Airport and Ireland West (Knock) Airport are both closer to Galway than Dublin is, but bus services to Galway are less frequent, particularly from Knock. Also, there are many more direct flights to Dublin.

Galway is located on the west coast, directly west of Dublin. The workshop venue is at the university, which is a 20 minute walk from the city centre. There are many guest houses, hotels and other accommodation options both in the city centre and in the university area. A fairly random selection of these is below - many more options for guesthouses in particular can easily be found. Guesthouse or B & B accommodation tends to be a bit cheaper than hotels, hostels are likely to be cheaper again.

Galway is a very small city but is quite lively, with plenty of restaurants and pubs and a busy music and theatre scene. The city centre and university areas are easily explored on foot. Information for visitors to Galway can be found here.
